ADL honors "Unseen, Unforgotten"

The Anti-Defamation League held their annual Heroes Against Hate concert with the National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center on Monday night. Among the honorees were the photographers of the Birmingham News for their work covering the Civil Rights Movement based on the images in "Unseen, Unforgotten" published by the News almost four years ago. Tom Self, former Chief Photographer accepted the award with the understanding that he was not a hero, just there to bear witness.

I thought I could present the project well, but Liev Schreiber added a level of gravitas I have been unable to provide.

Other honorees included the daughters of a man shot during the hostage-taking of the Achille Lauro cruise ship in 1985 and the victim and family of a victim of neo-Nazi who attacked a Jewish Community Center and postal carrier in Los Angeles in 2000.

Gabriel Byrne read half the stories, bu not "Unseen, Unforgotten."
