Soccer is almost always in the daytime and at a time of day when there is nice light, no masks, and decent action. There is some waiting for the ball to not always be on the ground, but it's worth it. It, along with cross-country, was the only sport I played in high school.

I was too busy making this frame of Franconia Ridge in the clouds to notice the sign behind me for the trail I wanted to take. Ended up on a different loop, but it was still a gorgeous day in the mountains.

It's hot. Damn hot. The first time all year. So, people are finally playing in the water. I went down to the river on Monday to get some folks on the beach at Sewalls Falls. By the time I got back to the office there was news of a girl drowning in a city pool two days before they close for the season. By deadline she had died and we pulled the photo. Maybe run it the next day.

By budget meeting time on Tuesday a man was missing in Newfound Lake. Rotten couple of days. So, this is where this photo will be published.

I'm staying away from water for a bit.

In the mountains

Spent Saturday hiking the southern Presidentials, from Ammonoosuc Ravine to Dry River Campground. First stop, Mt. Monroe with an amazingly clear view of Mt. Washington.

The trail from Mizpah Hut to Dry River was wacky. The Dry River Cutoff Trail was not dry and not much of a trail. This section was navigable. At one point I had been following a boot prints of a lone hiker. They ran out and were replaced by moose tracks. Calf-deep mud soon followed, then two river crossings, one where the suspension bridge has failed.

Sunday, I hiked Mt. Tom and Field and stopped by Pearl Cascade to cool my feet. It might have been the hottest day of the summer this year.

We were looking at some of Burt Glinn's work recently at the Monitor and I decided to try something like that style, sans-flash, while walking the streets of Manhattan last weekend.

Next time I am taking a camera to the All Points West festival. What an incredible backdrop!

Slowly catching up to posting. I made this photo with Christine's camera while exploring Swans Island, Maine. That's what happens if you leave your camera behind.

My aunt let us stay in their house on the island, which was pretty incredible. There are twenty-five houses on their mile and a half-long road and only a few yards to the ocean. This image is from shortly after the fog lifted for the first time in two days. I bought a couple of lobsters from the guy whose pier is just out of the frame on the right. I had no idea what his view was like until the next day.

The view is looking south to the Dominican Republic, the next place for landfall. Burntcoat Harbor light is the name of the lighthouse.

I geeked out over a rainbow. This is the best I could do with its ephemeral lifespan. I wish I were higher and wider, but either way, I am a geek and I know it.

No more trees

Tornadoes are rare in New Hampshire, but one came through here last year. We could have done a better job connecting with some of the people effected by it, but the thing that struck me was one hillside in Deerfield, near the border with Epsom, that had been mowed down by the twister. I had fun making pictures of some of the few trees left standing over there.

I broke my rule about drawing inside the lines with this one. A story about the Suncook river, which broke its banks in 2006 and keeps forming a new and different channel at a rapid pace. I thought a photo montage would work here, but I need to figure out a link so the bigger picture can be seen online. We ran it across the Sunday front for a different look than usual.

a day in the clouds

There was a break in the weather on Sunday, finally. After three weeks of rain it was nice. But there was still plenty of weather on the summit of Mt. Washington. I hiked up the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail with plenty of other folks, a big change from the TriPyramids or most peaks in the Whites, where you are on your own. Then there was the mob at the summit. Kids in tee-shirts and flip-flops giggling out of their cars to dash up the final 25 yards from the parking lot before heading inside for a slice of pizza. Wow.

Refugee Health Crisis

In November I set o0ut to do a story tag-teaming with Fall '07 Monitor photographer Kari Collins on a family of Bhutanese refugees resettling in Concord. Jasoda Tamang, the wife and mother of the young family had some health issues that kept them from leaving Nepal with the rest of the extended family in the summer, but we didn't know it would get as life-changing as it did.

She was in and out of the hospital with her husband, Pema, by her side translating as best he could. In February she got an operation on her lungs and after 51 days, 35 of them in the ICU she got out. I finished shooting less than a week before publication date, but thankfully, the parts came together with Chelsea Conaboy's fantastic writing.

The Monitor gave it a special section and galleries are online.
